Track Insight / Lyrics
I stood beneath the porch at night
Steel ribs held the rain in sight
Then the wind took my white skin
Turned me outward, loud and thin
My handle pointed down the lane
While gutters spilled a softer rain
A tin can rolled across the street
And every gust pulled at my feet
I felt the shingles lift and groan
As I was thrown and left alone
I opened like a broken bell
My ribs flashed where the rain could dwell
The gutter ran beneath my side
And carried bits of night outside
No hand reached down to pull me straight
The storm kept turning me from state
Wind, wind, turn me inside out
Scatter every rib and shout
I am black beneath the flood
Calling with my open bowl
Wind, wind, no place to hide
I am wide, I am wide, I am wide
A blue porch light saw me spin
While shutters clanged beneath the bin
My silver seams caught fire bright
Then vanished in a flap of night
I struck the steps and did not bend
A wrecked and shining thing to mend
Wind, wind, turn me inside out
Scatter every rib and shout
I am black beneath the flood
Calling with my open bowl
Wind, wind, no place to hide
I am wide, I am wide, I am wide
Now I lie beneath the oak
With branches leaning through my cloak
A beetle crosses what remains
And rain taps tiny windowpanes
I cannot fold the way I once could
I hold the storm like wood
A child finds me beside the road
And lifts my bent tip from the load
She turns my face toward the light
Then lets me tumble through the night
My ribs scrape soft against the grass
A small black choir passes
By dawn the road is loud with wheels
A truck hums through the rain and feels
My broken edge beneath its door
A little dust sticks to the floor
I watch from under broken slats
While every passing shadow passes
Wind, wind, you turned me inside out
Scattered every rib and shout
I am black beneath the flood
Calling with my open bowl
Wind, wind, no place to hide
I am wide, I am wide, I am wide
I am wide
The storm moves on across the field
My silver ribs have lost their shield
A child will find me once again
And lift the rain from either hand
I hold the dark, I hold the sky
Wide open, watching, wide.
