Track Insight / Lyrics

Coffee pot's empty and the grill's turned cold Short-order tickets tell the stories told Regulars all paid and slipped out through the door I punch the clock and walk the gravel floor I water the ruins where the screen used to glow Rusty can tracing lines where the headlights would go Midnight shift's over but I'm still on the clock Watering ruins round the old drive-in lot Screen frame stands like a skeleton of steel Weeds push up through the cracked asphalt heel Projector room's a hollowed-out shell I trace the rows where the tires used to kneel I water the ruins where the screen used to glow Rusty can tracing lines where the headlights would go Midnight shift's over but I'm still on the clock Watering ruins round the old drive-in lot Found this can behind the shed back home Red paint peeling like a sunburned chrome Spout bent sideways from a drop or two But it pours just fine when the night is through I water the ruins where the screen used to glow Rusty can tracing lines where the headlights would go Midnight shift's over but I'm still on the clock Watering ruins round the old drive-in lot Sprinkle the spots where the speaker posts stood Daisies pushing up through the rotting wood Mrs. Chen's Toyota left a rust stain there Where she'd sneak in pie from the diner chair Sweet potato crust in the midnight air No customers left to ask for extra gravy No eggs to flip or hash browns waving Just me and the can and the silver screen ghost Pouring out memories I miss the most Drop by drop on the holy ground Ticket window's a bird nest in the rain I water the edges once again Projection light won't cut the dark no more But I know the path to the candy store I water the ruins where the screen used to glow Rusty can tracing lines where the headlights would go Midnight shift's over but I'm still on the clock Watering ruins round the old drive-in lot Can hangs dry on the diner wall Tomorrow night I'll water them all
