Track Insight / Lyrics

Meter stopped at quarter past Wheelhouse lanterns hold the mast Apple branches scrape the hull Diesel fumes and cider pull Tugboat rests in snowy rows Where the frozen river flows Captain counts the blinking buoys Dreams of ports and harbor boys Anchor deep in root and stone Far from channels he has known Fare from dockside paid in fish Told me storms don't grant a wish Branches heavy, painted white Hold the vessel through the night Radio sings static hymns Compass spins on borrowed rims Tugboat rests in snowy rows Where the frozen river flows Captain counts the blinking buoys Dreams of ports and harbor boys Anchor deep in root and stone Far from channels he has known Thermos steam on charted glass Watching snowflakes kiss the brass Orchard keeper nods his head "Shelter here 'til dawn turns red" Mooring lines on frozen bark Hold the steel against the dark Tugboat rests in snowy rows Where the frozen river flows Captain counts the blinking buoys Dreams of ports and harbor boys Anchor deep in root and stone Far from channels he has known Dawn cracks pink on icy crown Engines wake and shake the ground Propeller bites the slush away Orchard fades to gray and gray Invoice written, fare collected Harbor route again selected Steel remembers wooden arms Shelter found in winter farms No fare charged for borrowed ground Just the silence, just the sound Mirror shows the orchard wake Tugboat cuts the harbor break But I still smell the apple frost On the wheel where hands were lost Taxi waits for next dispatch Carrying the harbor's hush Tugboat rests in snowy rows Where the frozen river flows Captain counts the blinking buoys Dreams of ports and harbor boys Anchor deep in root and stone Far from channels he has known Tugboat rests in snowy rows Where the frozen river flows Snow falls on the harbor rail Tugboat leaves the orchard veil
