Track Insight / Lyrics
The porch is dark, the lantern low
A gust rolls down the hollow road
My silver spokes begin to sing
Then wheel around beneath the wing
I watched the rain cross field and fence
Through dusk along a weathered porch
A careless latch, a careless shove
And suddenly I flew like force
The porch light shook, the shutters cried
A tin can rolled from side to side
The old well swung, the screen gave way
And left my ribs exposed to day
The wind turned me inside out
And shook my secrets to the ground
I heard the cabin cry aloud
When all my shelter touched the ground
The wind turned me inside out
My silver skin against the dust
I opened wide, I gave a shout
And found the storm had turned me out
I landed where the map was torn
Beneath a porch that time outwore
The bluebird house had lost its door
The mailbox leaned beside the floor
A dress hung still behind the glass
A kettle waited in the grass
The chimney stood, the window black
Like empty eyes upon my back
The wind turned me inside out
And shook my secrets to the ground
I heard the cabin cry aloud
When all my shelter touched the ground
The wind turned me inside out
My silver skin against the dust
I opened wide, I gave a shout
And found the storm had turned me out
A child ran barefoot through the hall
And laughed to see me break the wall
The rain came down, the floorboards shone
A stranger searched for what was gone
My handle pointed toward the creek
Where bent reeds curled beside the wreck
A waterbird complained in flight
As pale as milk against the night
The wind turned me inside out
And shook my secrets to the ground
I heard the cabin cry aloud
When all my shelter touched the ground
The wind turned me inside out
My silver skin against the dust
I opened wide, I gave a shout
And found the storm had turned me out
Now I lean beside the door
Where two young hands held me once before
The rooms are bare, the hinges undone
The evening wears its setting sun
I keep one rib beneath the bark
A splinter from a cabin dark
And when the dry leaves softly fall
I dream of shelter through it all
A red-haired child once swung me high
Past rusted rails and apple pie
The summer sang beneath the trees
While daddy laughed and hummed the breeze
Then time tore loose the laughter deep
And carried half the house asleep
Tonight a stranger lifts my weight
And carries me beyond the gate
The wind turned me inside out
But I remember home's last sound
I heard the cabin cry aloud
When all its walls fell to the ground
The wind turned me inside out
My silver skin against the dust
I opened wide, I gave a shout
And found the storm had turned me out
The wind turned me inside out
Still holding shelter in my ground
The gate swings wide, the road runs out
A lantern leans, the stars call out
I keep the cabin in my rib
And shelter every wandering thing
