Iron skin and a copper glaze
Left behind in a summer haze
Hiding now from the winter chill
Frozen deep and the air is still
Rusty can in the frozen white
Holding on through the purple night
Underneath where the branches bend
Waiting for the winter to end
Silver flakes on a wooden seat
Bitter wind and a sudden sleet
Dusk descends on the apple row
Buried deep in a heavy snow
Empty belly and a broken spout
All the summer colors run out
Old red paint peeling off the side
Nowhere left for the light to hide
Rusty can in the frozen white
Holding on through the purple night
Underneath where the branches bend
Waiting for the winter to end
Cold steel meets the garden floor
Lock the gate and the cellar door
One last drop of the autumn dew
Turning grey and a shade of blue
Orchard ghosts in a velvet gown
Watching all of the petals brown
Metal cold and the grip is tight
Sinking slow in the dying light
Rusty can in the frozen white
Holding on through the purple night
Underneath where the branches bend
Waiting for the winter to end
Let it sleep in the winter glow.
Underneath all the heavy snow.
