Track Insight / Lyrics

You coil the cable tight around your wrist The diner glow cuts through the salted mist Your pliers flash beneath the buzzing sign Three AM and you still splice the line The spool unwinds with a steady hiss Splice the night watch the copper gleam Diner coffee dark as diesel stream You hold the connection steady and true The wire sings and the storm breaks through Yeah the wire sings and the storm breaks through Vinyl booth holds the weight of your gear Fluorescent flicker you know too well here The waitress pours without a word or sound Your splice case clicks on the Formica round Steam rises slow from the ceramic crown I kept the lamp turning thirty years Now I watch you chase the static fears Same hands that trimmed the wick and glass Now strip the sheath and let the current pass The logbook rests where the lens light was Splice the night watch the copper gleam Diner coffee dark as diesel stream You hold the connection steady and true The wire sings and the storm breaks through Yeah the wire sings and the storm breaks through Fog rolls in off the headland ridge Phones go dead along the frozen bridge But here you sit with steady hand Binding what the salt has planned The tester beeps green across the land Dawn cracks pale across the parking lot The last splice tested and the line runs hot You wipe your palms on denim worn and thin Another night patched up from deep within The truck door slams and the engine begins Splice the night watch the copper gleam Diner coffee dark as diesel stream You hold the connection steady and true The wire sings and the storm breaks through Yeah the wire sings and the storm breaks through Hold the line let the current break through Coil the cable wipe the pliers clean The longest watch you ever seen
