I hung on Cadillacs and Chevrolets Heard first dates and final goodbyes Window rolled down speaker clipped in place Movie light painted surprised eyes Taxi meters ticked on dashboard glow Drivers knew the streets they loved the show Speaker box remembers everything Guard dog sleeps on concrete slab Projection room is rusted metal Only static answers back Midnight euphoria and fatigue Wobbly guitar sings low and deep Rain drips through my cracked plastic cone Guard pulls collar lights cigarette He checks the fence where wire is torn Shares his thermos shares his regret Taxi wisdom in his muttered breath Meter runs whether moving or still Long way round avoids the pothole death Cash up front pay what you will Weather turning hear the old man say Keep the change and drive the night away Speaker box hears every word he speaks Guard dog whimpers in his sleep Speaker box remembers everything Guard dog sleeps on concrete slab Projection room is rusted metal Only static answers back Midnight euphoria and fatigue Wobbly guitar sings low and deep Marquee letters spell nothing now Weeds grow through the cracked asphalt Speaker cord hangs like a broken vow Guard walks rounds his footsteps soft Wurlitzer hums in projection dust Hofner bass begins to thump and thrust Dawn breaks pink on peeling screen Guard packs up his folding chair Speaker box stays rusted unseen Still clipped to empty winter air Taxi pulls away from curb at last Meter silent journey past Speaker box remembers everything Guard dog sleeps on concrete slab Projection room is rusted metal Only static answers back Midnight euphoria and fatigue Wobbly guitar sings low and deep Static hum on broken wire Morning swallows midnight choir Speaker box remembers
