Track Insight / Lyrics

Porch light clicks off at six seventeen My candle wakes in hollow green Feet shuffle past in polyester capes I count each knock and gum-wrapper shape Smolder grin watches midnight turn Wax drips slow where shadows burn Smolder grin holds the old year's end Ash mouth speaks without a friend Smoke curls thin from the community pyre Embers choke on the midnight wire My rind sweats cold where the frost bites deep Three sharp teeth I carved to keep Smolder grin watches midnight turn Wax drips slow where shadows burn Smolder grin holds the old year's end Ash mouth speaks without a friend Frame one witch on a busted bike Frame two vampire checks his mic Frame three skeleton keys the lock Frame four ghost drops her candy sock Smolder grin watches midnight turn Wax drips slow where shadows burn Smolder grin holds the old year's end Ash mouth speaks without a friend Wick sputters loud in the drafting wind Skin wrinkles where the mold begins But I still grin with my triangle nose Guarding the step where the cold wind blows Seed memory in the compost heap Root tendrils crawl in their frozen sleep I was field mud then vine then fruit Now I'm smoke and a collapsing root Morning bus brakes at the corner stop Kids kick me flat with a sneaker pop Orange pulp smears on the gray sidewalk One last tooth keeps the dark unlocked Smolder grin watches midnight turn Wax drips slow where shadows burn Smolder grin holds the old year's end Ash mouth speaks without a friend Smolder grin fades but won't break Rind returns to the dust it makes Collapse into compost sweet and deep Next October I'll wake from sleep
