Carbon arc burns in the booth upstairs Peeling plaster falls like old prayers Film splices jump where the cement failed Ghost trains arrive on the silver rail Silver reel turns in the depot night Peeling paint catches the projected light Two ghosts watch the frames go by Train never comes but the reels don't lie Grill lights hum at three a.m. Coffee stains the counter rim Regulars order the same old thing Night shift waits for the morning ring Silver reel turns in the depot night Peeling paint catches the projected light Two ghosts watch the frames go by Train never comes but the reels don't lie Dust dances in the projector beam Celluloid dreams in a steam-heat dream Sound track crackles from the horn speaker Voices of towns that grew no deeper Light throws shadows on the waiting chairs Smoke curls up through the kitchen air Both places hold what time left behind Flicker and grease in the same design Eggs turn white on the seasoned steel Bell dings sharp for the morning meal Truckers talk of the highway bend Depot sits at the track's dead end Silver reel turns in the depot night Peeling paint catches the projected light Two ghosts watch the frames go by Train never comes but the reels don't lie Final reel flutters on the take-up spool Booth goes quiet the machine plays cool Keys turn locks on the heavy door Depot sleeps on the dusty floor Silver reel turns in the depot night Peeling paint catches the projected light Two ghosts watch the frames go by Train never comes but the reels don't lie Silver reel turns in the depot night Peeling paint catches the projected light Projector cools on the metal shelf Grill goes dark until tomorrow's self
