Track Insight / Lyrics

Iron rails drink the salt from wind Telegraph poles lean like tired men His fingers trace the key once more Dots and dashes mark the hollow hour Static rises where the signal dies Rust eats copper beneath grey skies He sends his code to empty track No answer comes and none comes back Oil lamp burns in the shack window Glass panes webbed with frost and time Coal dust settles on the sounder Brass contacts green with creeping rot Static rises where the signal dies Rust eats copper beneath grey skies He sends his code to empty track No answer comes and none comes back I watched the beam sweep thirty years Across the water dark and deep Now I count the boxcars passing Hear the wheeze of braking steel Static rises where the signal dies Rust eats copper beneath grey skies He sends his code to empty track No answer comes and none comes back His hands are stained with battery acid Knuckles swollen from the cold key Eyes fixed on the needle trembling Writing ghosts on smoked paper tape Morning breaks but fog holds fast No ship in sight no train in past The key goes silent wire goes slack Iron returns to oxide black I rowed out once to trim the wick Found the tower empty lantern cold Now I listen for his final message Buried in the static rising Static rises where the signal dies Rust eats copper beneath grey skies He sent his code to empty track No answer came and none came back Fog lifts slow the yard stands still Only rust remains on the hill
