I parked my body on a stone
A lonely fare who flies alone
The mesa wind is hot and dry
Beneath a white and vacant sky
I am rusting in the glare
Hanging in the heavy air
Pale wings turning brown and old
Turning into desert gold
The canyon floor is deep and wide
With nowhere left for me to hide
I watch the lizards crawl the grit
While all my silver colors quit
I am rusting in the glare
Hanging in the heavy air
Pale wings turning brown and old
Turning into desert gold
I remember nights of velvet black
A one way trip with no way back
I chased a bulb that burned too bright
And lost my way inside the light
I am rusting in the glare
Hanging in the heavy air
Pale wings turning brown and old
Turning into desert gold
The heat is like a heavy coat
A dry salt taste inside my throat
My edges curl like burnt out lace
In this wide and open place
I waited for a cooling breeze
To bring my shaking spirit ease
But the sun just drinks the dew
And turns the copper into blue
My wings are thin as paper sheets
Like empty alleys, dead end streets
I hold the heat of noon-day sun
Until the long day's work is done
I am rusting in the glare
Hanging in the heavy air
Pale wings turning brown and old
Turning into desert gold
Just a fare that paid the toll. Desert gold.
Pale wings.
