Track Insight / Lyrics

The watchman's torch rests on grey boards Its brass head worn by wind and sword No beam cuts through the driving rain Just rust blooms on the metal vein Salt eats the switch the spring the coil Lightning paints the dark with oil The battery bleeds its final breath Beneath the porch stairs facing death Oh the light don't shine like it done before Salt and storm have locked the door A keeper knows the metal's fate Rust claims all that guards the gate The wooden porch groans deep and low Whitecaps crash where gulls won't go The lens is clouded green and brown No signal sweeps the harbor down Tide creeps up the pilings slow Eating iron making ghosts The contact points are fused and cold No spark left in the story told Oh the light don't shine like it done before Salt and storm have locked the door A keeper knows the metal's fate Rust claims all that guards the gate He used to climb the tower stair With oil cans and a cloth to spare Now arthritis locks his knee The flashlight rots where none can see Oh the light don't shine like it done before Salt and storm have locked the door A keeper knows the metal's fate Rust claims all that guards the gate The storm surge licks the porch floor boards The flashlight shakes but not from chords Of thunder only vibrations deep Where salt and iron secrets keep Oh the light don't shine like it done before Salt and storm have locked the door A keeper knows the metal's fate Rust claims all that guards the gate Morning breaks the sky turns pale The storm retreats on a salt wind sail The torch lies silent broken dead A relic where the keeper led Oh the light don't shine like it done before Salt and storm have locked the door A keeper knows the metal's fate Rust claims all that guards the gate But in his palm he holds the key To build a lamp for storms to be Iron sleeps in red dust now The keeper nods a solemn vow
