Track Insight / Lyrics

You watch that copper rooster spin above the screen The northeast wind cuts through the broken marquee Your meter's dark but the night still runs on gasoline That rusted arrow knows which way the memories flee Rust arrow points where the projector died Rust arrow turns with the turning tide No fare to collect where the double features played Just the wind and the copper and the debt unpaid The snack bar stands like a tombstone made of concrete Your cab smells like cold rain on vinyl seat heat The speaker poles lean where the lovers used to meet That vane keeps spinning on its frozen street A Sudbury boy once paid three dollars for the view Now the screen's a canvas for the pigeon crew You learned to read the sky before the forecast grew That copper finger knows what the wind makes you do Rust arrow points where the projector died Rust arrow turns with the turning tide No fare to collect where the double features played Just the wind and the copper and the debt unpaid Midnight dispatch crackles static through the dash The highway hum don't care about your cash But up here the air remembers every name Spun into the joints of the weather vane Dawn breaks gray on the Interstate 95 The vane goes still when the morning winds arrive You log the miles where the drive-in used to thrive Another rusted pointer showing who's alive Rust arrow points where the projector died Rust arrow turns with the turning tide No fare to collect where the double features played Just the wind and the copper and the debt unpaid Rust arrow points where the projector died Rust arrow turns with the turning tide The meter clicks zero as the sun climbs high That copper rooster watches the highway lie
