Quercus alba drinks the grey sky
Corten steel lets patina lie
Xylem pulls what clouds supply
Lenticels gasp as winds blow high
Rust and root hold fast tonight
Slow growth beats the flash of light
Porch and car share borrowed height
Storm will pass and leave them tight
Mycorrhiza threads the gravel bed
Brake wheel dreams of sap instead
Cambium rings where paint has bled
Photosynthesis paints it red
Rust and root hold fast tonight
Slow growth beats the flash of light
Porch and car share borrowed height
Storm will pass and leave them tight
Transpiration fogs the cracked glass
Dormancy breaks as moments pass
Stomata open wide for rain
Iron drinks the sky again
Rust and root hold fast tonight
Slow growth beats the flash of light
Porch and car share borrowed height
Storm will pass and leave them tight
Foot tambourine taps on the floor
Gang vocals rise like shoots once more
Harmonium drones a root chord low
Acoustic strings let patience grow
Lightning writes nitrogen in soil
Thunder shakes the boxcar coil
Porch joists flex with fibrous strain
Roots and steel survive the rain
Dawn reveals the water weight
Steel and cellulose articulate
No winner in this balanced state
Just survivors at the gate
Rust and root hold fast tonight
Slow growth beats the flash of light
Porch and car share borrowed height
Storm has passed and left them tight
Rust and root hold fast tonight
Slow growth beats the flash of light
Quercus stands on Corten ground
Silent growth without a sound
