Track Insight / Lyrics

I trimmed the wick for thirty years Salt rusted through the iron tears The Fresnel lens caught winter light Now poles carry a different night Postcard waits at pine line edge Ink faded on the creosote pledge No stamp remains on corner bent Just wind that knows where messages went She wrote the words in kitchen steam Addressed in pencil careful scheme The mail truck bounced on gravel road Past pines that shed a needle load Postcard waits at pine line edge Ink faded on the creosote pledge No stamp remains on corner bent Just wind that knows where messages went I watch the crossarms hold the wire Like yardarms rigged for signal fire The insulator glass catches dawn Same way my lens would catch the swan Postcard waits at pine line edge Ink faded on the creosote pledge No stamp remains on corner bent Just wind that knows where messages went The postcard shows a shore I know White tower on a cliff below She marked the X where lantern glowed Now poles march where the keeper rowed No foghorn sounds through needle air Just hum of current copper prayer But light still travels line to line From shore to pines a steady sign I know the rhythm of the blink I know the rhythm of the ink One flashes out across the spray One waits where shadows kiss the day Both guide a traveler to land Both held within a caring hand Postcard waits at pine line edge Ink faded on the creosote pledge No stamp remains on corner bent Just wind that knows where messages went The beam still sweeps in telephone wire Postcard glows like phantom fire
