Track Insight / Lyrics

You step off the bus with film in your coat The driver don't ask where you're going Snow dusts the branches of the old apple trees A wooden hull sits where the grass was growing Your fingers find the viewfinder in the cold One frame captured before the light folds Orchard anchor holding through the white Orchard anchor waiting out the night The wood remembers how to float The roots drink deep beneath the boat Spring will come and crack the ice's coat You click the shutter on the peeling paint Flash catches frost on the iron ring Each photo a breath you don't have to explain The negatives develop what the cold don't bring Your breath makes clouds against the gunwale wood Another frame exposed the way it should Orchard anchor holding through the white Orchard anchor waiting out the night The wood remembers how to float The roots drink deep beneath the boat Spring will come and crack the ice's coat Your thumbs know the advance lever by heart Wind it forward like a prayer you don't speak The orchard keeps its counsel in the dark The boat keeps secrets that the ice can't keep A squirrel darts across the frozen deck You catch the motion save it from the wreck Orchard anchor holding through the white Orchard anchor waiting out the night The wood remembers how to float The roots drink deep beneath the boat Spring will come and crack the ice's coat Headlights sweep the road a mile away You pack the camera zip the canvas bag The rowboat stays it doesn't need to say It's seen a hundred winters break and drag You shoulder the pack and walk the snowy row The orchard keeps the boat you've got to go Orchard anchor holding through the white Orchard anchor waiting out the night The wood remembers how to float The roots drink deep beneath the boat Spring will come and crack the ice's coat Orchard anchor you're already home
