Track Insight / Lyrics

Cypress knees hold the porch light high Taxodium shadows stretch and sigh Steel hull rests on muddy tide Spartina grass is woven wide Oh the tugboat sleeps on cypress knees Rocking slow in evening breeze Iron dreams of open sea But tonight it belongs to me I speak in Latin to the bark Quercus virginiana makes its mark The engine cools its fevered breath No salt spray left to threaten death Oh the tugboat sleeps on cypress knees Rocking slow in evening breeze Iron dreams of open sea But tonight it belongs to me Harmonium hums a low C drone Foot stomps the rhythm on the boards I own Nyssa roots drink deep and dark Fireflies trace a glowing arc Oh the tugboat sleeps on cypress knees Rocking slow in evening breeze Iron dreams of open sea But tonight it belongs to me Morning comes with diesel roar The hawser snaps the silent shore But dusk returns the steel to rest Cradled in the cypress chest I measure growth in rings of time Not miles logged on a captain's line The bayou holds what oceans leave A quiet harbor reprieve Oh the tugboat sleeps on cypress knees Rocking slow in evening breeze Iron dreams of open sea But tonight it belongs to me Cypress knees hold the night so deep Iron sleeps while the waters creep Taxodium stands where the current runs deep Final chord on a reel so sweet
