Track Insight / Lyrics
Desert highway stretches black and wide
Projectionist waits on the shoulder side
Silver beam cuts through the saguaro arms
Guardian of night and its quiet charms
Engine hums low like a cello string
Waiting for the morning light to bring
Night reel spins on the asphalt screen
Headlights write what the dark has seen
Taxman knows every mile and turn
Road don't care where the hearts may yearn
Steady now, keep the picture clear
Dawn will find us waiting here
Cactus shadows stretch like film strip frames
Each mile marker calls out its name
Dust settles on the lens cap glass
Time exposes what will come to pass
Radio static speaks in code
Stories carried on the desert road
Night reel spins on the asphalt screen
Headlights write what the dark has seen
Taxman knows every mile and turn
Road don't care where the hearts may yearn
Steady now, keep the picture clear
Dawn will find us waiting here
Coyote crosses through the projector's gate
Pauses where the light and dark relate
Old driver checks his mirror twice
Sees the journey, pays the price
Waltz time ticks on the dashboard clock
Every fare becomes a steady rock
Night reel spins on the asphalt screen
Headlights write what the dark has seen
Taxman knows every mile and turn
Road don't care where the hearts may yearn
Steady now, keep the picture clear
Dawn will find us waiting here
Sunrise develops the negative night
Colors bloom in the harsh new light
Projectionist packs his heavy case
Leaves the highway to its empty space
Taxi rolls on with a steady hand
Best navigator in the land
Night reel spins on the asphalt screen
Headlights write what the dark has seen
Taxman knows every mile and turn
Road don't care where the hearts may yearn
Steady now, keep the picture clear
Dawn has found us waiting here
Last frame flickers, journey done
Highway rests beneath the sun
Meter stops, the fare is paid
Desert keeps the plans we made
