Track Insight / Lyrics
Downtown shadows lengthen
As the last train carries me home
I linger on a gritty bench
Watching globes of dust motes roam
Glisten in shafts of city light,
Float on drafts through the evening streets
Or settle on abandoned books,
Guarded treasures of forgotten dreams
Yet in this urban wilderness,
Comfort waits in fleeting moments
A buskers' melody or a passerby's smile
Brief epiphanies in a concrete maze
So I'll wait and watch those motes dance
In the warm glow of the subway's lights
Unmoored for a night, yet oddly at peace,
Embracing the city's lonely delight
Now a pigeon lands, cocking its head,
Seeking crumbs from a discarded snack
As above, the distant wash of "Take the A Train"
Echoes through the tunnel's concrete pack
Yet in this urban wilderness,
Comfort waits in fleeting moments
A saxophone wail or a baby's goodnight
Brief epiphanies in a concrete maze
So I'll wait and watch those motes dance
In the warm glow of the subway's lights
Unmoored for a night, yet oddly at peace,
Embracing the city's lonely delight
Perhaps tomorrow, the drifter will move on
Leave behind the bench, the bench its throne
But tonight, I'm ensconced in my duffel
Conductor of my own midnight symphony
So I'll wait and watch those motes sway
In the warm glow of the subway's lights
Unmoored for a night, yet oddly complete,
Embracing the city's secret delight
Downtown shadows deepen
The night's rhythm keeps me sleepless
But in this urban solitude,
I find a strange and stubborn peace.
