Shutter clicks on peeled paint horses
Autumn wind through broken courses
Diesel rumbles low and deep
Driver wakes from heavy sleep
Midway shelter steel and sky
Where the exhausted drivers lie
Neon faded bulbs all blown
This carnival becomes a home
Eighteen wheels on frozen asphalt
Coffee cold in thermos vault
Camera flash catches my face
Kid with no fixed dwelling place
Tilt-A-Whirl rusts into brown
Leaves skitter across the ground
He offers apples from his crate
We share the weight of highway fate
Midway shelter steel and sky
Where the exhausted drivers lie
Neon faded bulbs all blown
This carnival becomes a home
Maps unfold on dashboards cracked
Dreams of home are loosely stacked
Shutter snaps the moment whole
Two runaways with different goals
Morning breaks through roller coaster
Engine turns the moment over
Photo tucked in sun visor slot
Memory is all we've got
Midway shelter steel and sky
Where the exhausted drivers lie
Neon faded bulbs all blown
This carnival becomes a home
Midway shelter steel and sky
Where the exhausted drivers lie
Neon faded bulbs all blown
This carnival becomes a home
Shutter clicks the park goodbye
Wheels turn north beneath gray sky
