Peeling paint on wooden bench slats Old depot sighs where the steam train sat Leather case cracked along the seam Sleeping deep inside a chemical dream Wind blows cold through broken window glass Waiting for a moment meant to last Finger poised on a silver crown Silence waits for the shutter sound Light leaks in where the paint peeled back Exposing film on a one-way track No preview screen to judge the frame Just silver salt and a chemistry flame Light leaks in developing the past Every shot is meant to last Keeper wiped the salt from lantern glass Watched the beam cut the foggy mass Now he holds this box of tin and leather Measures light in a different weather Train tracks rust where the weeds grow tall No timetable hanging on the wall He winds the lever clicks the gear Hears the mechanism turning clear Light leaks in where the paint peeled back Exposing film on a one-way track No preview screen to judge the frame Just silver salt and a chemistry flame Light leaks in developing the past Every shot is meant to last Kodak box expired ninety-three Emulsion sleeps in humidity Latent images on acetate base Waiting for the developer's embrace He packs the bag throws the case on the seat Highway stretching beneath his feet No GPS just a folded map Closing the shutter on the depot trap Frames wait dark in the great unknown Developing slowly on its own Light leaks in where the paint peeled back Exposing film on a one-way track No preview screen to judge the frame Just silver salt and a chemistry flame Light leaks in developing the past Every shot is meant to last Stops the car where the canyon opens wide Pulls the camera from the passenger side Estimates the sun sets the f-stop ring Hears the spring sing a mechanical song Light leaks in where the paint peeled back Exposing film on a one-way track No preview screen to judge the frame Just silver salt and a chemistry flame Light leaks in developing the past Every shot is meant to last Click the shutter let the light leak in Watch the image slowly begin
