Track Insight / Lyrics
First snow settles on the weathered fence
Taraxacum blinks beneath the garden wall
I kneel in gravel, listening to all
My boots go quiet when the whiteheads fall
The cold arrives, but it cannot call
Let white on the fence turn the night to gray
I trace one bright line where the shadows lay
The cold takes a name, then takes it away
But I leave a lantern in the clay
And wait for green to find its way
A Quercus branch drops beneath the moon
The dandelions tuck their heads in soon
I watch their borrowed gold become a plume
A seed waits patient underneath the tomb
I mark the place with garden markers made of broom
At dusk the sparrows claim the leaning wire
A redwing pecks the frosted stems and rail
I laugh when all the summer plans turn pale
The fence holds winter's fingerprints, still frail
While every frozen bud conceals a tale
Let white on the fence turn the night to gray
I trace one bright line where the shadows lay
The cold takes a name, then takes it away
But I leave a lantern in the clay
And wait for green to find its way
The garden slumbers, not entirely still
Beneath the soil, another clock runs deep
Roots keep their counsel underneath the hill
While frost rehearses what the spring will keep
And I guard their dreams with patient care
By morning hoarfrost welds the latch in place
My enameled mug steams beside the shears
A bitter draft slips through the frozen gears
I draw a crooked fern across the years
And plant my stubborn hope beneath the pears
Let white on the fence turn the night to gray
I trace one bright line where the shadows lay
The cold takes a name, then takes it away
But I leave a lantern in the clay
And watch the first green push through today
When April loosens every frozen seam
The fence will drip all day like broken glass
I'll find the green returning to the grass
One root has kept its lantern in the loam
And winter leaves without another blast
