Track Insight / Lyrics
You count teeth on brass gear wheels
Twilight winds the driveway reels
Quercus roots crack concrete seals
Time grows wild in hour's heels
[Pre-
Oil stains bloom like Petunia
Each tick a root in clay
Mainspring coils, a Dahlia
Unwinds the orderly way
Escapement clicks in gravel dust
Seconds bleed in iron rust
You wind down, you wind down
Till the mainspring breaks its trust
Hollowbody hums low and deep
Leslie spins a slow creep Taxus baccata keeps
Vigil where the darkness sleeps
[Pre-
Gear teeth mesh like Vinca vines
Counting down the fading light
Each rotation draws a line
Between the day and coming night
Escapement clicks in gravel dust
Seconds bleed in iron rust
You wind down, you wind down
Till the mainspring breaks its trust
Brass section mutes the evening air
Hammond breathes a heavy prayer
Digitalis stands aware
Of poison in the watchmaker's care
Balance wheel forgets its swing Regulator loses hold
Chronos cuts the final string
Time runs wild, time runs cold
Escapement clicks in gravel dust
Seconds bleed in iron rust
You wind down, you wind down
Till the mainspring breaks its trust
Spring reverb drips like morning dew
On Polystichum fronds, untrue
The apprentice comes unglued
Each gear a leaf, each tooth a clue
Escapement clicks in gravel dust
Seconds bleed in iron rust
You wound down, you wound down
Now the mainspring breaks its trust
Gravel holds the final tick
Silence roots where time grew thick
