Roots remember loam and taxonomy
Cucurbita pepo reads the seed
Silence grows where vines once trailed and crept
Photosynthesis sleeps while shadows sweep
Sodium lamps paint ribs in amber light
Cucurbita glows through autumn night
Children pass in polyester wings
Crunching leaves that October brings
Cucurbita knows the Halloween
Steady watch on porch and scene
Mist curls round the stem and vine
Sodium heart beats keeping time
Taxonomy carved in ridges deep
Genus species mark the night's advance
Roots drink rain through clay and loam
Patience measured in seasonal tome
Cucurbita knows the Halloween
Steady watch on porch and scene
Mist curls round the stem and vine
Sodium heart beats keeping time
Wind carries cinnamon and smoke
Vine recalls the words it spoke
Cucurbita feels the season turn
Lessons learned in soil return
Candy wrappers rustle near the stem
Taxon watches over all of them
Latin names float on the misty air
Cucurbita pepo standing there
Dawn will pale the sodium glow
Cucurbita watches seeds below
Rot returns to feed the coming spring
Halloween fades but taxons sing
Cucurbita knows the Halloween
Cucurbita knows the Halloween
Mist curls round the stem and vine
Sodium heart beats keeping time
Taxonomy rests in morning dew
Cucurbita waits for next October
