I sink beneath the frozen gray
Where heavy canal currents sway
A golden spring and silver wire
Lost in the winter's biting fire
Ticking fast in the winter haze
Counting down through the foggy maze
Bring me back to the maker's hand
Deep in the mud of a sunken land
The boy reaches down through the cold
Searching for brass and polished gold
His fingers shake in the biting air
Finding a piece of a broken snare
He pulls a chain from the river bed
While the morning sky turns a rusty red
A clockwork heart in a rusted shell
Ringing a lonely metal bell
Ticking fast in the winter haze
Counting down through the foggy maze
Bring me back to the maker's hand
Deep in the mud of a sunken land
Oil and grease on a frozen street
Racing the dawn on heavy feet
The bridge is high and the water deep
While the sleeping city starts to leap
He wipes the silt from a tiny face
Putting the gears back in their place
One final turn of the copper key
Now the broken machine is free
Ticking fast in the winter haze
Counting down through the foggy maze
Bring me back to the maker's hand
Deep in the mud of a sunken land
Turning slow in the winter light
Copper gear, out of the night
Out of the night
