Track Insight / Lyrics
By dawn the lake lay frozen deep
Three gray wings scolded through the ice
I watched from shore to count them twice
My old hands rested, cold and nice
On the frozen pond, the geese cry
They shove the old dreams aside
Every wing lifts, strikes, and flies
Still I hear them inside
Wind worried at my lantern chain
And combed the frost from windowpane
Below, two ganders stretch and preen
They scold till all the pond wakes green
Boots rang hollow on the stone
My thermos lost its winter tone
Four white breasts challenged me to stare
Across the blue and brittle air
On the frozen pond, the geese cry
They shove the old dreams aside
Every wing lifts, strikes, and flies
Still I hear them inside
The lamp turned slow inside my chest
The pond held one last breath
No wing could tell me who was right
No bird could cross the dark to light
My shadow leaned into the ice
And listened as the warnings sliced
Dusk erased their tracks from shore
I opened up my lighthouse door
One goose cried low, then quarreled back
As if my leaving made it black
On the frozen pond, the geese cry
They shove the old dreams aside
Every wing lifts, strikes, and flies
Still I hear them inside
On the frozen pond, the wild geese cry
They claw at every memory
Every wing lifts, strikes, and flies
I still hear home inside their cries
Go on, old wings, above the white
Drag winter through the fading light
I'll trim the lamp and turn from shore
Though one thin cry will knock once more
The pond will hold the voices brown
Till footsteps sink into the town
