Rain slicks the Clark Street pavement black Your meter's off there's no way back The Blue Note door swings inward slow Downstairs the air is thick as smoke You stand beside that basement pool The water breaks the jazz club rule No ripple moves where lights are low But something stares from down below Neon sign flickers through the grate Casting shadows on the water's face You lit a cigarette hand don't shake Watching circles that the smoke don't make You stand beside that basement pool The water breaks the jazz club rule No ripple moves where lights are low But something stares from down below Reflection shows a different night A woman in a dress of white She ain't here now she ain't been here But the pool shows her drawing near You stand beside that basement pool The water breaks the jazz club rule No ripple moves where lights are low But something stares from down below Saxophone cries through the ceiling cracks You check your watch you check your back The water rises inch by inch You never thought you'd ever flinch You stand beside that basement pool The water breaks the jazz club rule No ripple moves where lights are low But something stares from down below It knows your name it knows your route It pulls you in it pulls you out The fare's paid the meter don't lie Dark water waits for you and I
