You hold a map with coffee stains
You drive through heat and desert rains
The dashboard clock is ticking fast
The city life is in the past
The air is thick and heavy gold
A secret story yet untold
Your tires hum a steady beat
Across the shimmering summer heat
I am the light on the open road
I help you carry every load
I send a signal through the black
To lead you home and bring you back
You see the cactus stand in line
The white paint on a rusted sign
The rearview mirror shows the haze
Of long forgotten summer days
The air is thick and heavy gold
A secret story yet untold
Your tires hum a steady beat
Across the shimmering summer heat
I am the light on the open road
I help you carry every load
I send a signal through the black
To lead you home and bring you back
Your camera lens is cracked and grey
You snap a photo of the way
The red clay dirt is blowing high
Against a bruised and purple sky
I am the light on the open road
I help you carry every load
I send a signal through the black
To lead you home and bring you back
I push the switch to make a sound
Until your lonely heart is found
The copper wire hums a song
To tell you where you now belong
I am the light on the open road
I help you carry every load
I send a signal through the black
To lead you home and bring you back
The desert wind begins to cool
The midnight stars are like a pool
You shift the gear and accelerate
You finally reached the garden gate
The signal is clear.
I'm waiting right here.
Just keep driving.
